Part 1 in a series on developing phonemic awareness through picture books and related activities.
Research shows systematic instruction in phonemic awareness helps beginning readers understand phonics lessons, develop reading skills, and learn to spell. This short video looks at how picture books can be used to help build the foundation for phonemic awareness and provide opportunities for learning and practice with different phonemes.
In particular, this video covers the use of a special ABC book to learn beginning sounds, picture books to work on the sound represented by the letter M, and ways to combine thematic units in different curriculum areas with practice on specific phonemes.
