Pat Hutchins began her career as an author and illustrator with the wonderful Rosie’s Walk. Like most of her picture books, this first one featured simple text and bright, uncluttered illustrations that added a level of humor to the story.

Hutchins grew up in England and earned a scholarship to art school. After graduation, she worked for an advertising agency and lived in New York for a short time. It was then that she began showing her work to publishers.

Following the success of Rosie’s Walk, Hutchins went on to create many more picture books that have been recognized with numerous awards. In addition to more than 20 picture books, she has also written several novels.
