Wombat loves Christmas, especially the Nativity play. At last, he is old enough to audition but there just doesn't seem to be a part that is right for him.
Australian Nativity Play
Wombat is finally old enough to take part in his beloved Nativity play. But when he auditions, each time the role is assigned to someone else. His friends Bilby and Emu try to console Wombat because there are no parts left. But then--"You could be the Baby Jesus!" The perfect part and he played it perfectly. (He even fell asleep, just as a real baby would.) The vivid watercolor illustrations are delightful and the different Australian animals are recognizable, even in their holiday pageant garb. Facial expressions and body language are quite eloquent. The book contains the elements of the Nativity story but its real focus is on friendship and caring.
