What is a Tree?

by Jenifer W. Day, illustrated by Manabu C. Saito

Simple text and illustrations introduce the characteristics of various types of trees.

What is a tree?
A tree is a plant, the biggest plant of all.

With each two page spread of big, brightly colored pictures and simple paragraphs of informational text the reader learns more about different kinds of trees. In addition to the familiar oaks and maples, types of trees shown include conifers, palms, magnolias, legumes, cactus, and the rose family. The table of contents and word list make this resource more reader-friendly; the last page summarizes the characteristics of trees as shown throughout the text. For younger readers the designations of "words that name", "words that describe", and "action words" in the word list are more useful than nouns, adjectives, and verbs.
