The Very Hungry Caterpillar

written and illustrated by Eric Carle

Counting and days of the week with a newly hatched caterpillar eating his way through all kinds of food.

Follows the progress of a hungry little caterpillar as he eats his way through a varied and very large quantity of food until, full at last, he forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep. Cleverly die-cut pages show what the caterpillar ate on successive days, graphically introducing sets of up to 10 objects and also the names of the days of the week in rotation, as well as telling the central story of the transformation of the caterpillar. The illustrations are brightly colored, simple and effectively placed on white backgrounds while the final, double-page spread of the emerging butterfly is a joyous explosion.
