The Elves and the Shoemaker

retold and illustrated by Jim LaMarche

In this retelling of the classic story from the Brothers Grimm a poor shoemaker becomes prosperous with the help of elfin magic.

Magnificent Paintings

I can't say enough about the illustrations for this retelling of the classic story of kindness, giving, and giving back. They are done in warm acrylic washes and colored pencils and feature delightful child-sized elves. There is an elegant mix of two-page spreads, full page paintings, and half page "thumbnails" that enrich the simple text. My favorites are the two page spread showing the elves hard at work and the full page portraying the elfin boy and girl in their new clothes dancing joyfully over a plate of doughnuts.
