Sea Shapes

written and illustrated by Suse MacDonald

This engaging concept book invites very young readers to identify basic shapes that transform into beautiful undersea creatures.

In this simple concept book each double-page spread is devoted to a different shape. On each left-hand page, a sequence of simple pictures shows a basic shape evolving into the shape of a marine animal. The opposite page pictures the animal in the sea. The brightly colored paper collages make it easy to follow along as the sea animal develops. For example, a diamond becomes the scale markings on a catfish and a triangle multiplies to become the teeth of a shark. My favorite mural shows the butterfly fish (transformed from a heart shape) swimming in the sea. The three final pages to present some information about each animal that could add interesting details to discussion of the pictures.
