On Our Vacation

written and illustrated by Anne Rockwell

The Bear family enjoy their camping vacation on an island.

The Bear family go on a two-week camping trip on an island. Brief descriptions show some type of very general activity, interspersed with double-page spreads showing labeled objects related to that activity. The story, told in a simple and straightforward way, begins with packing bags and ends with returning home.

Lively watercolor-and-ink pictures complement the text with their clarity and understatement. The clearly labeled thumbnails make this book an excellent reference for young writers. For example, from the deck of the ferry to the island they see a lighthouse, sea gulls, seaweed, buoy, porpoises, water skier, tugboat and barge, fishing boat, sailboard, sailboat, jellyfish, rowboat, and the island.
