Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present

written by Charlotte Zolotow, illustrated by Maurice Sendak

Mr. Rabbit helps a little girl find a birthday present for her mother, who is especially fond of red, yellow, green, and blue.

A little girl asks a rabbit for help finding the perfect gift for her mother's birthday. By brainstorming things that are her mother's favorite colors they come up with an ideal solution to the problem.Their conversation is natural and repetitive which encourages prediction and active responses. The variety of items discussed for red, green, yellow, and blue provide an interesting springboard for learning more about colors.

The illustrations in this Caldecott Honor book are simple but add interest and flow to the story. Despite the few lines used to draw Mr. Rabbit the reader can easily see his focus on the task with concern and patience through his facial expressions and body positions.
