written and illustrated by Jean Marzollo

The familiar sing-song verse updated with more information about the man and his voyage.

This story of the first voyage of Christopher Columbus is surprisingly complete, despite the brief and simple text adapted from the familiar song. It even manages to be "correct," both politically (" 'Indians! Indians!' Columbus cried; / His heart was filled with joyful pride. / But "India" the land was not; / It was the Bahamas, and it was hot") and historically ("The first American? No, not quite. / But Columbus was brave, and he was bright"). The watercolor illustrations complement the story well.

I Like This Book

I use my Big Book edition with younger groups and the size of the wonderful watercolor illustration helps impress the readers with the immensity of the undertaking.
