Hunwick’s Egg

written by Mem Fox, illustrated by Pamela Lofts

A mysterious egg appears after a terrible storm and Hunwick the bandicoot cares for it and comes to understand its secret.

A charming little bandicoot named Hunwick finds "a most curious egg." After conferring with Emu, Cockatoo, and Echidna, Hunwick takes it back to his burrow where it becomes his friend and confidante. It does not hatch and he and his neighbors come to realize that the egg is actually a perfectly shaped stone. Glowing watercolor pencil illustrations in orange, pink, and violet tones showcase the animals and the Australian landscape.

A slightly different look at companionship and loyalty. This book could also appeal to those with special feelings for their own rock or toy or "blankie".
