A delightful variation of the Tortoise and the Hare fable paired with Brian Wildsmith's distinctive illustrations.
This retelling of the familiar tale is based on a version of the fable penned by Jean de La Fontaine, a French writer and poet in the late 1600's. In this version hare and tortoise are having and argument and tortoise challenges his opponent to a race. News of the race spreads through the forest and many of the woodland animals show up to witness the big event.
This book is my favorite Wildsmith creation. The page spreads with animal crowds are full of fun detail and I adore the image of Hare asleep next to a clump of flowers sheltering some birds and grasshoppers.
Done in Wildsmith's distinctive style the illustrations are fresh and colorful, and a little impressionistic.
