The Gates of the Wind

by Kathryn Lasky, illustrated by Janet Stevens

Looking for adventure, Gamma Lee heads for the mountains. When she finally arrives, she discovers a fierce wind that does not want any company.

Gamma Lee decides to trade life in the quiet valley for a wild, windy mountaintop because she suspects that the best place in the world remains to be seen. After a few false starts, she joyously adapts to her new surroundings. The delightful drawings, done in watercolor, acrylic, pencil, and pastel, are appropriately wispy and windblown.

I Like This Book

Gamma Lee, a wiry, colorful eccentric, is a welcome image of an adventuresome older woman. In time, she becomes a legend to the village children below, an inspiring reminder of the wonderful world that lies beyond.
