Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On

written and illustrated by Lois Ehlert

Brightly colored fish introduce counting and basic addition in this concept book that also involves shapes and colors.

Stylized fish shapes in razzle-dazzle colors against a dark blue background float across the pages from one to ten, accompanied by one little dark fish who keeps the count going. Cutout circles at the eyes reveal colors on succeeding pages. The slight text, occasionally in rhyme, introduces adjectives like green, smiling, striped throughout the count.

Look Sharp

The little fish doing the counting is dark and the black print for his comments is easy to miss. This is where the addition comes in: Bright white text: "7 seven flipping fish" and then his repeating observation: "7 flipping fish plus me makes 8"
