Drummer Boy

written and illustrated by Loren Long

After accidentally being thrown away, a beloved toy drummer boy embarks on a winter adventure, playing his drum for others in the cold.

On a cold winter's day, a little toy drummer boy in a snappy red uniform mysteriously appears on a child's doorstep. The boy loves the drummer but the dog's swishing tail sends the little drummer into the trash which leads to a wild adventure all around town. He survives by playing his drum and bringing peace to every listener he comes across. Finally, the drummer ends up in a cemetery, where the boy finds it near his grandfather's grave.

Charming acrylic illustrations of crisp winter scenes in an elegant blue and gray palette give a real sense of scale and place. The last painting of the drummer boy playing for the baby in the manger is particularly moving.
