Four baby farm animals spend the day playing in nearby fields and become confused when trying to find their way home.
A piglet, a lamb, a calf, and a foal ask permission from their mothers to walk across the fields. They notice where foods they love are found but are not hungry early in their day. They decide to eat their favorites on the way home but cannot find the turnips, bales of hay, or apples. They are confused and afraid they are lost. Subsequent readings and careful study of the typical Hutchins illustrations will help solve the mystery of the missing food and show the way home.
