Deep Down Underground

written and illustrated by Olivier Dunrea

Animals present the numbers from one to ten as earthworms, toads, ants, and others march and burrow, scurry and scooch--deep down underground.

Detailed illustrations done in pen-and-ink and watercolors show the animals under the ground in cutaway format with the tunnels in white. The groups of animals accumulate while one wee moudiewort (Scottish for mole) moves through the pages alone. The rhythmic text uses great action words such as prance, scrunch, scamper, and glide and is a delight to read aloud.
