Paul Galdone was born in Hungary but emigrated to the United States when he was 14. He studied art at the New York School for Industrial Design. He worked several different jobs from finding steady employment as a freelance artist. He illustrated several works written by others, including Anatole and Anatole and the Cat, both written by Eve Titus, which received Caldecott Honor medals.

Galdone used simple, repetitive language in his own retellings of old folktales, and he paired the text with colorful illustrations that were simple but engaging. Many of his retellings, including the Gingerbread Boy, The Little Red Hen, and the Three Billy Goats Gruff are still immensely popular.
