Graeme Base is an Australia author and illustrator who created one of the world's most popular alphabet books, Animalia.

Born in England, Base moved with his family to Australia when he was eight. He often felt out of place in school except in art class, where he was able to impress his classmates with his creations. From that experience, he decided to become a professional artist. He studied graphic design in college and worked for a short time in advertising before moving on to doing illustrations for literary magazines.

His first book, My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch, was published in 1983 and met with modest success. But it was Animalia, published 3 years later that cemented his career as a creator of children’s books. Since then he has written several more international favorites, including Uno's Garden, The Worst Band in the Universe, and The Legend of the Golden Snail.
